Editorial Component / Automated Image Gallery

Overview

Great image galleries can drive a lot of traffic to a website. However, selecting, cropping and publishing them is a time consuming task and photo editors can only create and service so many galleries a day.

Solution

Our solution is to automate the whole process, which is especially useful if you have access to hundreds of new photos every day from the wire services. Our developers have written an application that publishes photos every 15 minutes by reading the metadata from each photo's caption as it comes in through feeds or uploads. These photos are then automatically sorted into different image galleries around the site depending on key word selection set up by the editors. Thumbnails are automatically created, resized and cropped.

Result

The result is a handy piece of automation that saves publishers significant costs and increases site monetisation. For example, before the Telegraph started using the tool, it had a small number of manually-updated photo galleries on its site. Now it has over 700 galleries automatically updated around the clock adding significant numbers of page impressions every month at minimal editorial cost.
